Legionella Essentials for Dental Practices

Legionella Essentials for Dental Practices online course for dental professionals
Includes: 8 Compliance Checklists

Course duration: 90 minutes
Our online course on Legionella Essentials for Dental Practices is designed specifically for dental professionals in the UK to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to comply with legal requirements and prevent Legionnaires’ disease.

Legionella can thrive in water systems like dental unit water lines (DUWL), sinks, taps, and air conditioning without proper management and control measures. This poses a significant threat to the health and safety of patients and staff in dental practices.

Our comprehensive online course covers all aspects of Legionella awareness, starting from the basics, including the background and health risks associated with the bacterium. We will take you through the potential hazards in hot and cold-water systems, highlighting the importance of identifying potential sources of infection and implementing appropriate control measures.

You will also gain an in-depth understanding of the legal framework surrounding Legionella regulations, particularly in dental practices. The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) sets out requirements for preventing Legionella in workplaces, including dental practices. Our course will help you navigate these regulations, ensuring you remain compliant with the law.

The aim of this Legionella Awareness course is to provide comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Legionella bacteria, its associated health risks, control measures, and relevant legislation as per current regulatory guidance.

The objective of this online course is:

  • To provide a detailed background and history of Legionella, its discovery, and the identified species.
  • To understand the magnitude of the risk posed by Legionella bacteria to public health and well-being.
  • To identify the potential hazards associated with both lethal and non-lethal Legionellosis and learn about prevention measures to mitigate the risk.
  • To differentiate between single cases and outbreaks and learn how to identify, report and investigate suspected cases.
  • To comprehend the factors that encourage the proliferation of Legionella bacteria in hot and cold water systems and understand the role of biofilm and sedimentation in contamination.
  • To recognise the hazards associated with domestic showers and dead legs within water systems, along with lime-scale accumulation leading to bacterial growth.
  • To familiarise learners with relevant UK legislation, including HSWA and COSHH, and learn about the ACoP L8 guidance for compliance.
  • To understand how to implement effective control measures and manage risks associated with Legionella in water systems.
  • To examine and learn from previous outbreaks, highlighting lessons learned and best practices for risk reduction.
  • To equip learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake a Legionella risk assessment, understand the control measures required, and how to comply with current regulatory guidance.
