Module 1: Principles, risks and benefits of radiation

Duration: 40 minutes

Module 1 looks at the subject of radiation; where it is found in the natural environment and how dental x-rays are produced. It explains the risks and benefits of ionising radiation and the factors involved in reducing the dosage to the patient. There is an overview of the two sets of legislation concerning radiography, along with the requirements for registration of practices with the Health and Safety Executive.

Module 2: Risks and responsibilities

Duration: 60 minutes

Module 2 covers the roles and responsibilities of the various duty holders in radiology and explains the concept of entitlement and its practical application. It also explains the differing roles of the Radiation Protection Advisor (RPA) and the Medical Physics Expert (MPE). There is a discussion of the controlled area and the local rules surrounding that, along with an introduction to the Radiation Protection File.

Module 3: Safe working practices and assessing risk

Duration: 60 minutes

Module 3 explores ‘optimisation’ and keeping the dose to the patient as low as reasonably practicable (ALARP), including selection, installation and maintenance of equipment. It also considers the factors involved in a radiology risk assessment and the requirements for training and ongoing CPD in radiology and radiation protection.

Module 4: Justification, selection and quality assurance of radiography equipment

Duration: 90 minutes

Module 4 considers selection criteria and justification of dental radiographs, including requirements for reporting, image quality analysis and clinical record-keeping. There is an explanation of the use of diagnostic reference levels (DRLs) and details of how to meet the requirements for a comprehensive quality assurance programme in practice.

Module 5: Developing and reviewing procedures and protocols

Duration: 60 minutes

Module 5 is concerned with the written documentation required to comply with IRMER17 regulations. It details all the employer’s written procedures with an explanation of their purpose, where responsibilities lie in implementation, and the factors to be considered in developing and reviewing the procedures and protocols.
